What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial intelligence is the computer science of making intelligent machines that can perform tasks and solve problems that typically require human intelligence. These machines are programmed to think rationally and take action in order to solve a problem or reach a specific goal.
AI reduces human error. This is because AI uses set algorithms and data to solve problems or complete tasks. This greatly increases accuracy and precision.
AI isn’t biased unlike humans who often make decisions based on their emotions. AI is completely rational and practical in its thinking which enables accurate decision making.
Humans cannot work all day, however artificial intelligence is available all the time. This drives down the time taken to perform a task or solve a problem and it allows humans to spend their time doing more important tasks.
AI can multitask which eases the workload for humans.
Computer programmes can use and adapt to new data without human help.
Travel navigation apps such as Google Maps use AI. They use AI to monitor the best way to your destination, factoring in traffic, weather and road blocks.
When we ask Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri or bixbi for the weather or for the directions to work, we are using AI. Digital voice assistants use AI backed voice user interfaces to process and generate answers for you.
Face ID uses biometrics to recognize your face and unlock your phone. AI is used to enable this functionality.
AI is also used on social media. It recommends posts that you might like based on your past history and suggests possible friends based on similar interests or mutual friends. It also uses algorithms to block out fake news and Cyber Bullying.
Entertainment streaming apps like Spotify, Netflix and Showmax use AI to analyze your past viewing history and deliver suggestions for future viewings.
AI is only as good as its data, so finding clean, accessible, well-governed and secure data is a priority.
Work with various data sources or organisations such as “data operations” who allow collaboration between data consumers and producers.
Finding people who are skilled in using AI is a challenge in many organisations.
You can teach your employees about the impact of AI in their work and how much it can help them. You can also focus on hiring people who are specially trained in that field.
Multiple AI programmers can be assigned to the job or jobs can be made specifically to identify and eliminate bias in AI.
Bias in AI systems has become a challenge. Narrow representation within AI programmers has meant that AI often have these programmers' biases programmed into the systems
AI is computer technology that is used all over the globe today and allows us to complete tasks efficiently and quickly. The diagram to the side shows us how AI is being used in our daily life.
AI presents many opportunities, however there are also risks and it needs to be managed responsibly. We must also realise that AI can never replace human creativity and innovation. AI is always being improved, so I can't wait to see what it has in store for us in the future.
