Tornadoes

What is a tornado?

Topic 1

A tornado is an agressive spinning column of air, it reachs from the clouds, all the way to the ground and is shaped like a funnel. It's formed when warm air rises and cool air falls along with rain or hail. These cause spinning air currents in the cloud, the air starts horizontal but then becomes vertical which turns into a tornado.

Tornadoes can be harmless, but can also be devestating.

How much damage does a tornado cause on average?

Topic 2

The average tornado causes about 2.5M$ in damages and the average death count of a tornado is around 80 people per year and 1500 injured per year.

Subtopic 1

The most expensive tornado ever, did around 2.8 Billion Dollars in damage and happened on May 22, 2011 in Joplin, Missouri.

Subtopic 1

Subtopic 2

The most deaths ever caused by a tornado was the Daultipur and Saturia Tornado which caused around 1,300 deaths and 12,000 injured.

Subtopic 2

Fujita Scale

Topic 3

The Fujita Scale is a scale used to measure the intensity of a tornado and the damage it causes. It is measured by meteoroligists and engineers.

The chart is in order by the scale, which is F0, which has a wind speed of less than 73 mph, F1, which is 73-112 mph, F2, which goes from 113-157 mph, F3, which is 158-206 mph, F4, 207-260 mph, F5, 261-318 mph, F5 is the most powerful tornado rating. There was an F6 but was removed from the scale.

Enhanced Fujita Scale

Text

The enchanced Fujita Scale was introduced in 2007, and is a more accurate way to measure tornado intensity.

Topic 4

The Tri-State tornado is the worst tornado in history and is called the tri-state tornado because it passed through Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. It's rated an F5 on the Fujita scale, it killed almost 700 people altogether, and 2000 injured.

Tornado Facts

Topic 5

- Tornadoes can be over one mile wide.

- Tornadoes can appear transparent before dust or dirt is picked up

- Most likely to occur between 3pm and 9pm.

- Peak tornado occurrence in southern states is march to may while in the northern states, is late june through august.

- Tornadoes formed over water are called waterspouts

-Supercell Tornadoes are an average of 10-20 miles wide

- - Most tornadoes occur in the U.S.e

-

Supercell Tornadoes

Topic 6

Supercell Tornadoes are the worst type of tornadoes possible, and are formed by a rotating updraft which forms the supercell and eventually the tornado, they have an average wind speed of 20 kph and is the most destructive tornado, they are 10-20 miles wide on average.

How to survive a tornado

Topic 7

1. Find a tornado shelter, or if you dont have one nearby, go to your basement.

2. If you dont have either of those or are at your work, go to the lowest floor and in a room with no windows when in a building with no basement.

3. Know what places to not go to, for example a tall building.

4. If in a car, take cover in a low lying place, such as a ditch.
