Autism: definition, characteristics, treatments, famous people with autism

It is characterized

by a difficulty to communicate and socialize with others.

Autism/Asperger's is a brain development disorder

Some characteristics include:

avoiding eye contact

Wanting to be alone

Speaking unusually

Making repetitive movements

Example of a famous person with Autism: Albert Eintstein (1879-1955)

  • Trouble socializing, even in later years
  • Severe Speech delays
  • Echolalia (repeating sentences)
  • Very technical

While it is up to debate, these were signs that Einstein landed somewhere in the autism spectrum.

Treatment

  • Medication
  • Therapy
  • Visit psychologist and psychiatrist daily
  • Help them with social interaction
  • Time management and organization

Academic Impact

  • Difficulty paying attention to teacher and peers
  • Poor understanding of their surroundings
  • Frequent procrastination
  • Lower grades
  • Missing out on class information

Social Impact

  • Unable to understand social cues (i.e. body language).
  • In everyday life, they don't understand why another person is upset.
  • They cannot predict another person's behavior.
  • Difficult to understand seeing things from other people's perspectives.
  • They find it hard to understand and get along with other people
  • In need of coaching to develop learning and social skills.

Strategies

  • Avoid sensory overload
  • Use visual cues
  • Be predictable
  • Give the students a schedule to follow
  • Keep language concrete
  • Teach figurative language
  • Treat the students as individuals

Autism can affect people differently, so some strategies can work better for some people than others.

In order to succeed academically, I will implement them and use these strengths as tools to be a better student and overcome my weaknesses.
