NATO was formed in 1949 by 12 different countries to provide collective security against the Soviet Union.
The 12 countries that created the NATO alliance were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States.
After the Potsdam conference, Germany was divided into four occupied zones: Great Britain in the northwest, France in the southwest, the United States in the south and the Soviet Union in the east. Berlin, the capital city situated in Soviet territory, was also divided into four occupied zones. Germany also lost territory east of the oder and Neisse rivers which fell under polish control.
Poland lost 70,000 square miles of territory to the Soviet Union so the eastern border of Poland was moved westward.
