Conflict in Literature

Conflict in literature helps drive the plot. It is the struggle that characters must overcome over the course of the story.

CONFLICT IN A STORY CAN BE MORE THAN ONE OF THESE TYPES

Conflicts can be the struggle against outside forces, or struggles within the character's mind.

Character vs. Character

This type of conflict finds the main character struggling against another character, human or not

Character vs. Character

Character vs. Society

This type of conflict has the main character struggling against a larger group.

It can be a community, society, culture etc.

Character vs. Self

This is internal conflict. The character struggles against their own thoughts/feelings

Character vs. Self

Character vs. Technology

This kind of conflict is when a character struggles against some form of device, machine, or network.

Character vs. Nature

This type of conflict finds the main character struggling against forces of nature (hurricane, flood etc.)

The element of nature serves as the antagonist.
