In this lesson, students will learn how to craft a voice in informal writings by answering themed journal prompts.

Introduction

I will start off by handing each of the students a journal that they will use as their writing portfolio.

Procedure & Activities

Every morning at 9AM, we will dedicate 30 minutes to answering a themed journal prompt. There will be a new prompt theme, weekly, for 2 weeks. The first theme will be Fantasy themed prompts and the second theme will be All About Me themes. At the end of each week, the students will type up their responses for their online writing portfolios. During Week 3, the students will pick one of their typed responses to create a slideshow or physical book presentation to present at the end of the week.

Presentations will be shown on Week 4.

Fantasy

Week 1

MONDAY: Write a story about people with superpowers and how they use them.

TUESDAY: Write a fairy tale about an outside trying to fit in.

WEDNESDAY: Write about an evil character who turns good.

THURSDAY: Write about someone who has someone who travels through a magic portal.

FRIDAY: Write your superhero or supervillian origin story.

All About ME

Week 2

MONDAY: Write about a country you want to visit as if you already went.

TUESDAY: Write about meeting your favorite cartoon character.

WEDNESDAY: Write about your favorite toy coming to life.

THURSDAY: Write about your day or memory with a family member.

FRIDAY: Write 3 life goals for yourself and why you want to accomplish them.

Presentations

Week 3

Students will select one of their typed journal responses to create a presentation. This can be done on PowerPoint or drawn.

Presentations will be presented on Week 4.
