  • Born on Nov. 17, 1896 near Moscow, Russia
  • Father was a banker, mother stayed at home but was a trained teacher
  • Second of eight children
  • Good student in primary and secondary levels
  • Died of Tuberculosis in 1934

Vygotsky came around in a time where many phychological theories were regected, denied, or made fun of. However, that did not stop him from succeeding.

  • 1913 Enrolled at University of Moscow
  • 1917 Completed education
  • 1917 returned home to Gomel, began a teaching career
  • 1924- participated in Second All-Russian Psychoneurological Congress in Leningrad
  • 1924- offered position as researcher at Psychological Institute at Moscow
  • 1925- first research project on dissertation on psychology of art
  • Went on to form the Laboratory of Psychology for Abnormal Childhood in Moscow.
  • 1926-30 worked with a group of students to investigate the developemnt of higher cognitive funtions
  • worked from 3 angles; instrumental, developmental approach, cultural - hitorical

  • He knew that a lot of his theories had underlying factors that made them false- special needs
  • Wrote "Scaffolding Children's Learning" and many other books/articles to support his theories and contrasting theories with colleagues.
