HS Sports Weekly Critical Reflection

By: Dylan Vega

How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

Question 1

My Magazine, HS Sports Weekly, utilizes the magazine conventions to help create a professional, yet inviting feel to the magazine. The magazine is meant to target high school athletes and the students of the high school age in general.

Cover

My cover photo of the baseball player in his batting stance helps my cover display a sense of dominance and ideology that he is in the center of the photo to resemble his importance as well. This person is one of the people used in my featured quotes of the double page spread and he corresponds with the baseball team for the school, which is mentioned in the articles as well. The batter is used as an overall symbol of all high school athletes in the articles in the magazine. As for the background of the photo, there was essentially a focus on the batter through the use of composition and shallow depth of field to really reign in on the focus of the magazine towards high school athletes, because what better representation for high school athletes than an actual high school athlete. It includes the total teases that are sufficient for the magazine, which is about 3 or so, and I used this to my advantage by including 3 and what looks like a sticker on a printed magazine, which ties into one of my forms of advanced copy in my double page spread.

For my table of contents, I used a main photo of the team at the top to help symbolize that the table of contents is essentially like a roster, hence why I added the title of roster and preceding beneath was the phrase starting lineup. I used the conventions of lining up all of the article teases in a row so it was nice and symmetrical, and I used an eyedropper tool to help make the page numbers the same shade of color as the infield dirt as in the top photo. I proceeded to use the 4 photos from my double page spread in my table of contents but with a shade of orange over them to not reveal the whole image, but to tease and show the page number where it can be found. Some major magazines have used this so I tried to incorporate this as well.

Double Page Spread

Next came the double page spread, to which I used various conventions. First came the columns of each article, I made sure they were evenly spaced as well as the captions being an even space from each picture. I made the pictures somewhat intertwined in the middle of the double page spread because it helped with the space problem and this was a major help in the end. My articles were a little too long so I decided to pull out each major quote and put it in the bottom of my double page spread by making them bigger and stand out to show their importance. Also I tried to highlight my title and make it bigger just like professional magazines I have encountered over the few weeks we worked on it.

Social Groups

This magazine truly represents social groups like the student athlete communities found in high schools everywhere, like the people who are struggling to balance the student life and athlete life. This is meant to target those kids to read this because it truly will give high school kids something to relate to.

Social Groups

How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?

Question 2

Engage with Audiences

My product engages with the audience of the high school students, because I used the mindset of targeting an audience that myself, as a high schooler, would interest me. I am a student athlete so this topic truly interests me and I use the cover athlete to help influence high school students to read it, such as many major magazines do, like sports illustrated to name one. It also helps to engage with the audiences by using action pictures as well as sporty photos which a primary interest for high schoolers is not only sports, but playing it as well. So by using my articles to talk about the student side and the athletic side to the student athlete life, it can help people who want to get involved, a little piece of what truly goes on and if they truly want it.

Engage With Audiences

Distribution

This would be distributed as a real media text by being an actual magazine, for an actual magazine for high schoolers. My magazine title of HS Sports Weekly would be the name of the overall magazine and it would be directed towards the same audience, and there is truly a targeted audience for this. This would be distributed as a real media text also through the articles I wrote, as it pertains to an actual double page spread, resembling a real magazine and could be dispersed as real and provide overall interest to high schoolers everywhere. It can also include several articles of the new upcoming athletes at a young age like sports illustrated did with this younger athlete here.

Question 3

How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

Cover

Starting with the cover, I learned to firmly place the main photo in the whole screen to help that be the true ‘cover photo’. All professional magazine have somewhat of a tease or a couple teases for their main articles on the cover, so I decided to do that as well. I learned how to put together all the titles on my magazine, starting with the actual name of my magazine at the top. The importance of font is key to production because it can help attract the reader with how the information is presented before you. I chose a big obnoxious cover title to give it the flare that I needed, and then I chose a different, less intimidating font for those of my article titles, keeping in mind I had a bigger scaled font for my main article. Magazines also have a scanning ability to the bottom corner of the magazine so I added that as well as the months of the edition of the magazine to give it a professional feel.

Table of Contents

Next came the table of contents where I learned that most table of contents have a main photo not in any of the articles, so I utilized that with the two teams aligned before the game. I also furthered my production skills by properly teasing the articles photos through using a faded color over them to give an element of want over the reader to have them turn and want to read the articles.

Double Page Spread

Lastly was the double page spread to which I gained the most important production skills, such as the use of columns, advanced copy, and captions. Columns truly helped my spacing problem with my double page spread, this helped give space all of the articles I had done. Advanced Copy helped provide a great deal of creativity through using pullout quotes, rearranging pictures in a certain way and other ways too. Captions also helped because you need to tell what is going on the the picture as well as the relevance and background information, These helped to further my progression in production skills as well as writing skills in general.

How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?

Question 4

The main technologies I integrated in the project was adobe indesign, google docs and blogger and just using my camera for photo shoots.

Adobe Indesign

For adobe indesign, this is where our whole magazine was created and centered. There were many programs that we utilized in this, like the making of columns, the eyedropper tool, and spacing of pictures as just a couple to name. Adobe indesign is where we made all three parts of the magazine, the cover page, table of contents and double page spread.

Google docs and Blogger

As for google docs and blogger, I used them intertwining. Every blog I wrote, I first wrote on google doc and then transferred it over to the blogger to ensure my work was properly saved. Also google docs was used to save all the writing for my rough draft of my cover, including the titles and headings, for the table of contents, and the double page spread drafts for the articles. This helped keep all my work easily accessible from any device and easy to fix at any time.

Camera

Lastly came the camera for the photo shoot. I used it’s many different settings to help get the perfect shot in which I got my cover photo and all the photos for my magazine in general. This helped with the editing of photos and getting the perfect angles as well, furthering my progression of the project with the integrated technology.
