Cultural stereotypes

by Cristian Feodorof

What are cultural stereotypes?

What are they?

  • A stereotype is an over-generalized belief about a particular category of people.

  • It is an expectation that people might have about every person of a particular group.

  • The type of expectation can vary; it can be, for instance, an expectation about the group's personality, preferences, or ability.

How they were perceived

Are they important?

  • Cultural stereotypes play an important role in our society because they are a way to depict how a nation views other cultures, nations or even themselves.

  • They also represent a humorous manner in which someone can mock themselves, their or a different nation, culture, government etc. without any major repercussions.

How the stereotypes influenced the Internet

Their impact on the Internet

Although cultural stereotypes played a crucial role throughout history and were heavily used in the past, we are still using them till this day.

They are really influencing the Internet, especially in places in which people communicate between each other, such as forums, comment sections. They are often used to show that someone knows something about that particular person's culture or simply tease people, and in rare cases discriminate them, more or

less.

Social media

Social Media

Through bringing together people from around the world and allowing them to connect and learn about each other, the Internet, in particular social media, has helped to dispose of these stereotypes. As well as debunking them.

Conclusions

Thoughts

In conclusion, cultural stereotypes represent a way to depict cultures, nations, morals. They reflect the opinion of a nation over another one or even themselves. Although they can be offensive, they should be taken with a grain of salt, because they are not necessarily meant to hurt anyone.
