What was the Arms race?

From 1897 to 1914, a race between the UK and Germany had happened. Britain had grown concerned about Germany's rapid evolution in naval power. This ended up with a costly building competition of military weaponry. This race ended at 1914, which was when war broke out.

This race had instilled fear and hostility on the countries involved. Alliances were formed and more conflict was occuring. The worst was on the horizon.

To put it simply, war broke out. After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the tension between countries had broken out which resulted in the first World War.

What was the importance of this race?

This was a competition between countries to build up their military strength. You can refer this to the word "Militarism". My Great-Great-Grandfather took part in this war. He fought with the USA.

The Gustav gun had weighed 1000 tons and was able to fire a 7 ton shell accurately to a target 23 miles away. This artillery piece was made by the Germans, and it was the biggest weapon ever built. It is said that one man with a bag of Thermite can melt through 4 inches of solid steel and destroy that gun forever.
