1181 aboriginal women have gone missing between 1980 and 2012

Homicides

Of the 1181 missing aboriginal women 1017 cases have been confirmed to be a homicide.

- Indigenous women make up 16% of all female homicide victims, but only 4% of Canadas population.

- Most common location aboriginal women are murdered is in their residence.

- In most aboriginal women homicide cases the victim knows the perpretrator, 30% of murders are carried out by aqquaintances, 29% by the womens spouse, 23% by a family member, and 10% other intimate relationships.

- most frequent motives in aboriginal womens murders: argument- 40%, frustration, anger or dispair- 20%

- offenders who murdered aboriginal women were 71% more likely to have a pre exsisting criminal record compared to 45% of all other females homicide offenders.

-63% of aboriginal female victims consumed intoxants prior to their incident, compared to 20% of all other female victims.

164 of the 1181 cases are considered missing

-to be considered missing for the RCMP report, the person had to have been reported missing at least 30 days prior.

-according to a 2009 GSS nearly 67 000 aboriginal females were victims of violence within the last year.

RCMP

-The RCMP has dedicated resources to develop a national missing persons strategy

-The RCMP is also going to communities with a high risk against women providing resourses for intervention, diversion, and family violence protection to be provided when needed.

-the Canadian Governments addition to the national plan to end violence against indigenous women is the Federal Pathway.

- To ensure that indigenous families, women and girls voices, perspectives, and views are the main focus of the work, the Government of Canada has brought together ober 100 indigenous women to partner and help them create the Federal Pathway.
