Spoons - Uncle Tom's Cabin because readers had to be "spoon-fed" the reality of slavery. Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was a book about a slave living in the South. It caused a lot of uproar from Southerners, who insisted that it was not true, while at the same time the Northerners loved it, and used it to speak out against slavery.

Bread Plate - Kansas- Nebraska Act because it is overlooked. The Kansas- Nebraska Act was an act that made Kansas a state and gave Kansas and Nebraska "popular sovereignty." What that means is it let the people in the state decide whether the state became a slave state or a free state. It completely destroyed the Missouri Compromise.

The Whigs were getting to be a big party, and then all of a sudden, they split. They split over the issue of slavery. The Southern Whigs supported slavery, and the Northerners did not. Simple as that. The Southern Whigs became Democrats, and the Northern Whigs became Republicans.

Napkin - Compromise of 1850 because it was supposed to clean everything up. The Compromise of 1850 was a series of compromises that gave both sides what they wanted. The Northerners were given California as a free state, and a law that prevented slave trade in Washington D.C. The Southernern were given the Fugitive Slave Act, and there would be no further laws preventing slavery in territory won from Mexico.
