1: Cool Kids by Echo Smith
2: Obstacles by Syd Matters
3: Uprising by Muse
"Yeah, they're invincible, and she's just in the background
And she says
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
'Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in
I wish that I could be like the cool kids"
"Let's say sunshine for everyone
But as far as I can remember
We've been migratory animals
Living under changing weather"
"They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious "
Cool Kids by Echo Smith is about somebody who doesn't fit it, and their want to be like the "cool kids". This fits Meg because in school she's an outsider, and just wishes she could be like other normal girls.
Obstacles by Syd Matters is a song about growing up, and moving past childish ways. This represents how Meg matures and grows throughout the story, and the obstacles she faces along the way.
Uprising by Muse is a song about rebelling against people who want to control us. In Meg case, it's about her rebelling and moving past her anger issues, impatience, lack of self- confidence, all of which attempt to control her
5: Where No One Goes by Cloudjumper
4: Oh No by Marina and the Diamonds
6: Dancing Queen by ABBA
"We can travel so far
As our eyes can see
We go where no one goes
We slow for no one
Get out of our way"
"You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet
Only seventeen
Dancing queen...Ooh, see that girl
Watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen"
"I just wanna change
I know exactly what I want and who I want to be
I know exactly why I walk and talk like a machine
I'm now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy"
Dancing Queen by ABBA is about a person looking at a young girl, who's only 17, having fun. This song can show how Miss Who, Miss What, and Miss Which sees when they look at Meg. To them, Meg is a girl just trying to live her life who has the potential to do great things.
Where No One Goes by Cloudjumper is quite literally about going places nobody ever goes to. In the story, Meg Charles Wallace, and Calvin go to dimensions and realms no other human besides her father has gone to.
Oh No by Marina and the Diamonds is about knowing who you are. This is another song that goes for Meg by the end of the book, since she finally has confidence in herself.
7: Dog Days Are Over by F+TM
8: Roaring 20s by P!ATD
9: Far Beyond by Dexter French
"Happiness, hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled"
"Have I overrun my time or is mine overrun?
Far beyond the universe
We find our minds inside ourselves.
I have courage on my side
And strength within my soul"
"Maybe I'll smile a bit, maybe the opposite
But pray that they don't call me thankless
My tell-tale heart's a hammer in my chest
Cut me a silk-tied tourniquet
This is my roaring, roaring 20's
I don't even know me"
Dog Days are over by F+TM is another song that can be used to see how other characters see Meg. In this song, they see how the acts both before and after getting her father back. In the first lines, they see how happy she finally is, and in the last to they see how evasive and aggressive she was.
Far Beyond by Dexter French is about finding yourself beyond the universe, which is exactly what Meg does. She goes to places far outside the universe, and in turn discovers her true potential. She does all of this, of course, with courage on her side and her own will to find her father.
When I listen to Roaring 20s, all I can think about is how well it fits Meg's story. Her Roaring 20s is her quest to save her father, and on the way how she comes to know herself by the end of it.
10: Guillotine by Jon Bellion
11: Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles
12: My Beloved Monster by Eels
"The secrets you tell me I'll take to my grave
There's bones in my closet, but you hang stuff anyway
And if you have nightmares, we'll dance on the bed
I know that you love me, love me
Even when I lose my head"
"My beloved monster and me
We go everywhere together...My beloved monster is tough
If she wants she will disrobe you"
"Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right"
Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles can be used to show Meg's Father's love for his family. When he goes missing, Meg is lonely and everything is just awful. Then, he comes home, and everything is all right again.
Guillotine by Jen Bellion is about somebody thanking another person for loving them no matter what. This song represents Meg's relationship with her brother, Charles Wallace. He always knows exactly what she's thinking, and is patient with her when she gets upset. He is one of Meg's major sources of support and love.
I chose My Beloved Monster by Eels because I feel like it represents how Meg sees herself. She sees part of herself as a monster, and uses it to protect herself from the pain of her father's disappearance. It's a side she hates and wants to change, but it's beloved to her anyway.
