By the end of this lesson, we will be able to:
Identify, form, and use and use irregular verbs.
Correctly use the past-tense forms of the irregular verbs eat, give, grow, take, write, do, go, run, see, give.
In English, the "usual" rule is to add "-ed" or "-d" to the base form of the verb to create the past forms.
Add "ed" to most verbs:
jump > jumped
paint > painted
If a verb of one syllable ends [consonant-vowel-consonant], double the final consonant and add "ed":
hug > hugged
stop > stopped
If the final consonant is "w," "x," or "y," don't double it:
sew > sewed
play > played
If the verb ends "e," just add "d":
thrive > thrived
stare > stared
If the verb ends [consonant + "y"], change the "y" to an "i" and add "ed":
cry > cried
fry > fried
An irregular verb is one that does not form its simple past tense by adding "-ed" or "-d" to the base form. Irregular verbs contrast with regular verbs. They live by their own set of rules
The conjugation is not based on the rules of tenses; but rather on the specific conjugation which is used for the word.
This means that verbal conjugation is a game of memorization. You need to memorize the specific conjugation for each irregular verb!
Go - went
See - saw
Do - did
Run - ran
Come - came
Give - gave
Grow - grew
Take - took
write - wrote
Eat - ate
Read - Read
Put - put
Hit - hit
Spread - spread
Bet - bet
Cost - cost
Cut - cut
Let - let
Hit - hit
Hurt - hurt
Complete each sentence using the verbs in the brackets. Think carefully about regular and irregular verbs!
