Since this is going to be my first year as the school counselor for the school, I would like to introduce to you what would be the plan for the following three years.
The following are the ASCA Components that are going to be implemented on each year (in order) starting with the one above
School Data Analysis and Collection
The focus on the school's data collection and analysis is to understand what would be the main focus when developing a counseling program based on what the school's administration and/or district wants as a goal. For instance, does the school wants to focus the counseling programs to be academic-based, therapeutic based, or career based? If so, what goals would they want the school counselor to reach by the end of the academic year based on the data analyzed or presented; Increasing overall academic performance? decrease the number of students involved in suspensions? organizing a group session to assist students with stress or anxiety? creating workshops on how to apply for college/university?
When analyzing the data, it would determine how everything is working at the school. That way, the school counselor will be prepared.
Advisory Council
After analyzing and collecting the school's data on year one, the next step would be to develop an advisory council as year two begins.
An advisory council is "a representative group of stakeholders selected to review and advise on the implementation of the school counseling program" (ASCA, 2019, p.72). The goals of an advisory council is to advise on annual student outcome goals, review annual student outcome goal results, make recommendations about the school counseling program, advocate and engage in public relations for the school counseling program, and advocate for funding and resources (ASCA, 2019, p. 72).
By implementing an advisory council at the school, it would benefit those involved into not just planning future counseling programs, but to keep maintaining and updating them based on trial and error in order to make the counseling program effective.
Direct and Indirect Services Suggestions
After the advisory council is implemented at the school, it should noted that by the beginning of year three both direct and indirect services should already be discussed at the school depending on the counseling programs.
The advisory council should plan ahead what direct and indirect services are the most ideals for the counseling program. For instance, if the counseling program focuses on job opportunity for the students, should the job application workshops and mock interview be ideal as a direct services for the school, while community referrals and internship opportunities would be the ideal approach as an indirect services? what would be the best effective option for the students in that situation?
The components mentioned are the ones that I considered important to be implemented at the school for the first three years. By being knowledgeable on how things are done at the school, the school counselor can create an advisory council by learning which members would be ideal for the council. Once the advisory council is created, they'll start to suggest the best direct and indirect services that would be more beneficial for the counseling programs.
However, I'm open for suggestions and recommendation on this subject.
