Crisis in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Crisis Number 1

  • Montag faces a crisis during part one on page 4(pdf) in the beginning of the book when Clarisse asked him if he was happy making him question his emotions and society throughout the whole book.

Crisis Number 1

  • An important way that Montag changes since the incident is by causing himto start questioning his lifestyle if he is truly happy.

"Are you happy?" she said.

"Am I what?" he cried.

But she was gone-running in the moonlight. Her front door shut gently.

"Happy! Of all the nonsense."

He stopped laughing.

Critique

Bradbury is criticizing the fact that people aren't actually happy in society, but instead manipulated to believe that they are.

  • During Part one of Fehrenheit 451 on page 18(pdf) Montag didn’t want to leave the woman behind to burn with her books, but Beatty just conceded that she was going to commit suicide and that was the way it was and couldn’t save her.

  • This changed Montag as an individual in society by making him think about the possibility of books being good and helpful to one.

  • Montag faces a crisis when he shows Mildred his books he has been hiding. During part two on page 33(pdf) Montag tries to Convince Mildred that books are helpful.

"And besides, if Captain Beatty knew about those books--" She thought about it. Her

face grew amazed and then horrified. "He might come and bum the house and the

`family.' That's awful! Think of our investment. Why should I read? What for?"

"What for! Why!" said Montag.

  • During part three in page 55(pdf) a crisis occurs when Montag sets Beatty on fire and has to flee from society.

  • Montag changes by having to think about how to get out of this situation and to think of a plan without facing consequences.

He reached the back yard and the alley. Beatty, he thought, you're not

a problem now. You always said, don't face a problem, bum it. Well, now I've done

both. Good-bye, Captain.

And he stumbled along the alley in the dark.
