New York City

  • It is situated at the mouth of the Hudson River, close to

the Atlantic Ocean

--> great geographical position = fast development

  • Most of the city stands on the three islands:

Manhattan, Staten Island and Long Island.

  • Three rivers separate the three islands:

--> the Hudson River: it divides the city from the state of New Jersey

--> the East River: it separates the Bronx and Manhattan from Long Island

--> the Harlem River: it separates Manhattan from the Bronx

  • There are 2,027 bridges and hundreds of tunnels and ferry services

The most famous and oldest bridge is the Brooklyn Bridge across the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn: it’s 1,825 m long!

New York City

New York City has five areas

called “boroughs”:

  • The Bronx: rap and hip hop were born here.

  • Brooklyn: it has a long beach called “Coney Island”.

  • Manhattan: it is famous for its skyscrapers, including the Empire State Building. There are business and financial centers, elegant shops and ethnic areas like Chinatown and Little Italy. If you want to relax you can go to Central Park.

  • Queens: it is a residential area.

  • Staten Island: it is connected to Brooklyn and to Manhattan with bridges and the Staten Island Ferry.

  • New Yorkers are reminded of their mixed origins through two great landmarks: the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

  • Nowadays people arrive in NY by plane but, between 1892 and 1954, 12 million immigrants arrived by ship.

  • The first thing they saw was the Statue of Liberty, so it became a symbol of freedom, opportunity and welcome for people looking for a better life.

  • The Statue of Liberty was made in France and transported to the USA in 1885. It was a present to the USA from France to thank America for its support during the French Revolution.

  • This great monument is 46 m tall!

  • On Ellis Island there is now a museum about immigration to remind all New Yorkers of their origins.

  • It is an urban park in New York City located between the Upper West and Upper East Sides of Manhattan.

  • It is the most visited urban park in the United States and is the most filmed location in the world.

  • It’s a great place to relax and have fun: it is full of attractions, from green meadows to sprawling waters, gardens and unique bridges, music and performance centers, educational facilities, classical architecture and more!

  • The observation deck is 1,224 feet (373 meters) up so you can enjoy a fantastic view.

  • The Empire State Building is a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan in New York City.

  • It was built from 1930 to 1931.

Washington D.C.

  • Washington D.C. is the capital of the USA.

  • It was named after the first American President, George Washington.

  • The DC means District of Columbia and was named after Christopher Columbus.

  • The most famous building in Washington is certainly the White House.

  • This is where the President lives and works.

  • It has six floors and 132 rooms:

some are offices and state rooms but

there are also private rooms for the presidential family.

  • The President’s office is called the Oval Office.

  • Some rooms have the names of colors

(the Red Room, the Green Room..)

San Francisco

  • It stands on a peninsula in California, on the west coast.

  • It has got an incredible bay to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

  • San Francisco has got a lot of hills, with fantastic views. Don’t miss Pier 39: have lunch there and watch the sea lions sunbathing amongst the tourists!

Golden Gate Bridge

  • The famous Golden Gate Bridge with its reddy-orange towers is the best loved symbol of the city.

  • It is a suspension bridge that connects the city to Marin County.

  • The color of the bridge is officially "orange" because it complements the natural surroundings and enhances the bridge's visibility in fog.

Los Angeles

  • It is the largest city in Southern California and the second-largest metropolitan area in the nation after New York.

  • Santa Monica beach is a State Park located along Pacific Coast Highway. It is 5.6 km long!

  • Tourists can walk to Beverly Hills and do some window shopping in the luxury shops!

  • The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles. They compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

  • It is a district in Los Angeles, California and it is famous historical centre of movie studios and movie stars.

  • Hollywood glitters with stars from the cinema and from the neon lights of the most glamorous road in Hollywood, the Sunset Strip.

  • The hillside Hollywood sign, Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame are the most important sites.

  • Universal Studios Theme Park is a working movie studio and an attraction everyone can enjoy.

Boston

  • It is the capital of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  • In the city area there are many colleges and universities which make it a world leader in higher education.

  • This modern city has got a fascinating history; the Freedom Trail is a 4.0 km long path through downtown Boston that passes by 16 locations significant to the history of the United States.

What is the Boston Tea Party?

  • It was one of the key events leading up to the American Revolution.

Was it a big, fun party with tea? Not really!

There was tea involved, but nobody was drinking it!!!

  • The Boston Tea Party occurred on December 16, 1773.

  • It was a protest by the American Colonists against the British government. They staged the protest by boarding three trade ships in Boston Harbor and throwing 342 chests of tea into the water.

  • It stands on the Mississippi River in the southeastern region of the U.S. state of Louisiana.

It is a truly unique town!!

  • Tourists can walk through the French quarters, they can eat the fantastic Creole food and listen to jazz music day and night. At Carnival time you can enjoy the famous “Mardi Gras” parades.

  • New Orleans is especially known for its strong association with jazz music, universally considered to be the birthplace of the genre.

  • The Mississippi River is the second longest river in North America, flowing 2,350 miles from its source at Lake Itasca through the center of the continental United States to the Gulf of Mexico.

  • The Mississippi River is one of the world’s major river systems in size, habitat diversity and biological productivity.

  • Today, the Mississippi River powers a significant segment of the economy in the upper Midwest.

Orlando

  • Orlando, in Central Florida, is a fantastic place for teenagers and kids: there is so much to do!

  • The Walt Disney World Resort is the largest tourist attraction in Orlando, opened by the Walt Disney Company in 1971.

  • The Universal Orlando Resort is the only theme park inside Orlando city: it offers great activities based on films such as Harry Potter and Jurassic Park.
  • It is a metropolis located in southeastern Florida in the United States, on the Atlantic coast.

  • The town is on an island.

  • Miami enjoys a vibrant culture that is influenced by a diverse population from all around the world.
