Imperialism vs Colonialism

  • Imperialism=iact of domination by one country or people over another group of people. It utilizes strategies and tactics through policies, laws, diplomacy and force to take over land.

  • Colonialism=physical act of setting up colonies or territories in another country to seek control to economically exploit it.

  • Social Darwinism ideology suggests that white european civilizations and their laws, religions, culture, etc are superior and a role model for others.

  • Example: Turtle Island - aggressive conquering of Indigeous land by European settlers for extraction of natural resources.

  • governments and settlers further exploited the land for profit.

Effects on Justice

  • By utilizing and implementing policies, diplomacy and force, strategically designed to keep certain groups disadvantaged.

  • Premised on the ideology that certain groups are inferior or superior to others with colonialism being based on and entrenched in the system of white supremacy.

  • Residential school = strategy implemented by these authorities to assimilate Indigenous children into white Canadian society, ultimately severing the Indigenous family and cultural ties.

  • Justice has not been served, as Indigenous communities still face institutionallized hardships.

  • structural racism and subsequent discrimination faced by minority groups was influenced by prejudicial practices and policies brought on by colonialism and imperialism

Effects on Justice Around the World and in Canada in the Past?

Impact on Different Communities

within Canada Today.

  • Residential schools = 4,130 confirmed names of children who died while at Indian Residential Schools.

  • Communities affected are still disadvantaged and continue to experience hardships.

  • Influenced generational trauma.

  • Drug abuse, alcoholism, depression and suicide linked to colonialism and imperialism.

  • Disintegration of cultural, economic and political institutions. Sanitation systems, housing, and water still an issue for Indigenous communities in Northern parts of Canada

  • Direct connections can be made with current global justice issues like human rights, gender equality, racism, climate justice, economic inequality (income gaps), and food insecurity.

  • industrial revolution influenced manufacturing economy, products were mass produced by machines resulting in increased capabilities.

  • its effects have contributed to environmental degradation, spread of disease, economic instability, ethnic rivalries, and human rights violations.

  • influenced destruction of native culture, sacred developments and local craft industries.

  • force, exploitation, domination used during the age of imperialism is responsible for many global justice issues we experience today.
