Great Texts:To Kill a Mockingbird

By:Maya Purvis 4A

To make a great text in my opinion is have a moral lesson that everyone can learn from no matter the decade. To do that make characters that the reader can make an opinion on. Lastly the to make a great text is to have themes that is inspired by life

Theme-

Racism-

A literary theme is the main idea or underlying meaning a writer explores in a novel, short story, or other literary work. The theme of a story can be conveyed using characters, setting, dialogue, plot, or a combination of all of these elements.

The theme of racism serves as the backbone of the novel. Characters like Atticus, Calpurnia, Tom and his family confront racial discrimination. Through the novel Scout is slowly learning more about racism from her father. Tom Robinson is convicted of rape and Toms race is the only strong evidence that stands against him

Innocence-

Jem and Scout are the representation of innocence. The trial of Tom Robinson slowly takes the innocence away from Jem and Scout. They are forced to learn about the racism and prejudice in their town. This new learned information helps the children in the end when they meet Boo Radley

Boo Radley is a product of the mockingbird. Even though he didn't do anything wrong he is still harmed by the community because they talk bad about him like he is some sort of monster. When one lie is made about him more follow after. But he makes Scout rethink the stories about him when he saved their lives when they were attacked by Bob Ewell

Scout, I think I'm beginning to understand something. I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time . . . it's because he wants to stay inside.

Tom Robinson is an important character because he gives the children and the reader a personal view of what its like being black in May-comb. His trial shows how the law in the south treats black people. Tom didn't commit any crime but in the end he is tried as guilty.

He told me I was acting like a girl and there was nothing to it -pg 4

Jean Louise or "Scout" is the protagonist and the narrator or the novel. We know her every thought and action. As we read we see Scout going from a product of the towns lies and beliefs to being more knowledgeable and aware of people other than herself. Also we read about Scouts battle with femininity. She wants to dress and act the way she wants

he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that's why his hands were bloodstained

In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird the message that the readers meet with is to not judge a book by its cover. We are encounter this lesson from both Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. When Tom is charged with raping Mayella Ewell, everyone believes her testimonial because he is a black man. At this point in time black men were seen as sexual predators. There was no real evidence, only that he was seen inside Bob Ewell's house. Practically everyone believed Bob, so convinced that they were ready to kill Tom in his cell. Alexandra visits Maycomb and is immediately expressing her views. Alexandra heavily believes n family heritage, so much so that she only respects those with a honorable last name. She believes that Scout should be dressing like a “lady” and acting like one so that she can live up to the family name. Also on many accords she disrespects Calpurnia and I believe from what Alexandra says that she was being unnecessarily rude to Calpurnia because shes racist, unlike her brother. There were many rumors made about Boo Radley by the people of Maycomb. They made up rumors about Boo to explain why his house is creepy and quiet. When in reality Aruthur is completely the opposite than what was to be rumored. This message should be taught to children at a young age. Judging a person based on their appearance can be damaging and can lead to dangerous practices like racism or ableism.

“… you’ve got to do something about her” (Calpurnia)

In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life
