Introduction

  • Young Adult Fiction
  • Roxanne Stewart & Joshua Blackbird

Beginning:

  • Story begins during josh's first concert
  • We met the the main characters Rox and Joshua who are in a relationship
  • We learn about Joshua's music career
  • As well as Joshua's little brother and his manager

Joshua starts to face conflicts

Obstacles:

  • Joshua goes through anxiety and depression due to his newfound fame

" A smile like falling. Like a weight, like sorrowful knowledge."

Research

Justin Bieber went through the same things Joshua did as a teenager

  • "'I just want people to know I’m human. I’m struggling just to get through the days. I think a lot of people are. You get lonely, you know, when you’re on the road. People see the glam and the amazing stuff, but they don’t know the other side. This life can rip you apart.'

  • Have u noticed the statistics of child stars and the outcome of their life? There is an insane pressure and responsibility put on a child who’s brain, emotions, frontal lobes (decision making) aren't developed yet. No rationality, defiant, rebellious, things all of us have to go through. But when you add the pressure of a stardom it does something to you that is quite unexplainable.”

Justin explains the struggles he went through

due to fame at a young age."

Research 2

"Becoming a celebrity alters the person’s being-in-the-world. Once fame hits, with its growing sense of isolation, mistrust, and lack of personal privacy, the person develops a kind of character-splitting between the “celebrity self” and the “authentic self,” as a survival technique in the hyperkinetic and heady atmosphere associated with celebrity life."

Donna Rockwell is a psychologists who published an article explaining the positive and negative effects of fame and this is one thing she said which explained the struggles Justin and Joshua went through.

Ending

  • Joshua disappears
  • While trying to find Joshua they try to figure out if its a suicide or a murder
  • Joshua's journal has some lyrics pg.128

"A blade of grass is connected to the others all around it, multiple blades pressed close, connected at the root, touching above it. Joshua’s absence is like that. It spreads through me and touches every thought.”

How Roxie explains how Joshua's absence

affects her.

Reflection

  • I learned that celebrities are their own people too, they go the same struggles as us and with an immense amount of societal pressure. Most celebrities actions are recorded by the media and have to attempt to always be a good role model for children, this often creates a persona, facade, or "celebrity self" in attempt to keep up the expectations to continue serving as a role model for children. They can't be their "authentic self" because they do not want to be criticized by the media so they try to keep up this "celebrity self" which ultimately leads to depression and anxiety like Joshua and Justin faced if not kept under control.

Reflection 2

TITLE

  • We should try to give celebrities a break and not criticize them so harshly for their actions as they are humans too, they face the same struggles we face and are under a lot of pressure constantly.
