The catawba river is over 200 miles long spaning over 2 states. The river is named after the catawba tribe which translates to "people of the river". This river is filled with wild life and other land forms. Some of these land forms include the grandfather mountain, pisgah national forest, and linville falls. The river starts in the blue ridge mountains and flows east and then south into laky wylie on the north and south carolina border. The catawba river also contains the most major dams than any other north carolina river. The longest free flowing part of the catawba river is only about 17 miles long. Most of the river is consisted of 7 man made lakes, helping to provide electricity, drinking water, and recreation purposes to those areas.
The Catawba river starts in the eastern part of the blue ridge mountains and flows into laky wylie on the border of north and south carolina. Some of the major cities that the Catawba river flows through are charlotte, hickory, asheville, and rock hill. The Catawba river basin is about 3,285 square miles.
The Catawba river contains 14 dams and 11 lakes. Some of those lakes being lake norman, lake wylie, lake hickory, and fishing creek lake. This basin is home to many unique and rare wildlife. An extremely rare drgon fly called edmunds snaketail is in the river basin. This river basin is also home to many species of fresh water mussle, including the carolina heelspliter which is endagered. The river is teeming with fresh water fish including trout, walleye, and smallmouth bass. It is also home to lots of different birds. These include the summer tanager, blue headed viero, and ruffed grouse.
The Catawba river runs through a lot of big cities, so it gets used a lot for different reasons. In the river there are 14 dams which supply those ares with energy. They also create lakes that are used for recreational activities and fishing. The land around the river changes as you move along it. In the begin is starts in the appalchains so it has mountains and is pretty rocky. Going down the land starts to become more forest, but there are also some urban parts of the river since it runs through some many cities
Because the Catawba river is so large and runs through largley populated areas it also can get pretty dirty. In 2008 it was listed as the most endagered river in america. Some of the pollution that goes into the river is from storm water runoff. It's dumping excess nurtrients into the water which can cause algae blooms. Another source of pollution is from the growing urban population that surrounds the river. One way that you can help is by not letting yard chemicals and trash get into storm drains on the road. Other ways you can help is by getting involved in organizations that promote and help clean the water.
