TEACHING CERTIFICATION
- Apply for certification with Alberta Education, typically in your last term in the BEd
- Once you meet your final degree requirements, the Faculty of Education sends Alberta Education a list, signed off by the Dean, of students who are graduating
- Alberta Education then issues teaching certificates to applicants who are on this list
- Will receive Interim Professional Certification

ELEMENTARY
The Bachelor of Education Elementary program is a generalist program that prepares you to teach elementary school subjects in Kindergarten to Grade 6.
Elementary students take courses from 8 different areas:

The Bachelor of Education Secondary program is a specialized program in which students will select a teachable major and minor. The program prepares students to instruct in these 2 subject areas in Grades 7-12.
Students will take 12 courses towards their major and 6 courses towards their minor, as well as 2 language and literature courses.

- Apply to our partner faculty and meet their admission requirements
- Automatically get transferred to the Faculty of Education after two or three years depending on which program you are in

- Designed for students who complete another degree first
- Can range from 2-4 years: Elementary is a pretty set 2-2.5 year program while Secondary can vary based on the major/minor you pick and how much coursework we can bring in from your first degree
- Will have two credentials and more specialization
- If the first degree you want is not offered as a combined degree or if you change your mind down the line, this is a great option!

The competitive average for each program may change throughout the year based on the competitiveness of the applicant pool.
WHEN WILL I GET ADMISSION?
- The first time we assess you is based on your Grade 11 grades (of the Grade 12 courses you will be using for admission) in October - December
- The next time we assess you is based on your Grade 11 grades and completed Grade 12 grades in February and March (This is when the majority of students will hear back). You can update your marks after Feb 1st
- The final time we will assess you is based on your final Grade 12 grades in the summer
*If we cannot offer you admission, we will place your application on a wait list. It will be re-evaluated when we get new grades from you or if our admission averages change.
APPLICATION TIP: CHOOSING YOUR SECOND CHOICE
Every new applicant to the University of Alberta gets 2 choices on their application.
You can use this as your back-up, however, choosing Education as a second choice may not result in an admission offer. We may not evaluate your second choice until the end of the admission cycle, if there is room in your chosen program.
*If an applicant is unsure of which program or route they want to pursue, they may wish to submit 2 separate applications with Education as the first priority

SUCCESSFUL TRANSFER TIPS
While we always recommend students start where they want to finish, we understand that some circumstances mean you may start somewhere else.
1. Check with a prospective student advisor in the Faculty of Education about how you can determine if coursework you are taking is transferable and could potentially meet a degree requirement.
2. Use the Transfer Alberta website if transferring from another institution such as MacEwan. Not all courses transfer between institutions - always make sure you check!
3. The sooner you apply to transfer, the better. We can keep you updated on your application and you can have earlier access to enroll in your classes.
4. Apply as early as possible for your chosen intake! Admission is competitive and based on a number of factors such as the number of qualified applicants to particular programs, the AGPA's presented by applicants, and capacity in individual programs.
*Always remember our program is subject to change and you will be subject to the admission requirements and program requirements at the time of your application and evaluation.

- Talk to your teachers about their experience in this career and consider doing some volunteer work or work experience with youth. This will really help you decide whether Education is right for you!
