VHS vs. Betamax

What are they?

- The first ways to record TV at home

- Betamax was released in 1975

- VHS was released in 1976

- JVC created VHS and a smaller VHS-C with an adapter

- Advertized by showing special things they had

  • Must be easy to carry

Who would want it?

- People who were not home all day

- Rereuns would show a month later

- Could watch at any time

- Betamax had better quality

- Everyone wanted to record shows they would miss

Economic Events

  • Just before the beginning of production, in 1973-1975 there was an economic depression. Money was low and people couldn't afford these types of luxuries.
  • From 1983-1989 there was an economic boom where electronics were increasingly popular.
  • Near the end of production, the Great Recession caused people to lose their jobs and they didn’t have much money for luxuries anymore.

- The VHS outlasted the Betamax - The VHS lasted almost forty one years, stopping production of any more casette tapes in June, 2016.

- Betamax reached fourty years of production

- Stopped making any more casette tapes in 2015.

- Had a better picture quality, though it had shorter recording time and a higher price.
