Theme Statement

When a mature individual steps up to become a leader for their community and set priorities, they may start to lose their power when the values of the community begin to change. As a result, the management and priorities they once had in place will begin to crumble under this loss of authority.

Purpose of the Conch Shell

Purpose of the Conch Shell

Ultimately the conch shell represents all civilization and order on the island, It was found when Piggy and Ralph first arrived on the island and it was used to call assemblies. The conch was also used to assert power during these assemblies, whoever held the conch was the only one allowed to speak, share their thoughts and opinions. Because Ralph was elected to be chief on the island the conch was often in his hands and he was the only one who could use it to call assemblies.

"We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us-." (Golding 7)

The Signal Fire

Purpose of the Signal Fire

The signal fire really represents the boys hope of getting off the island, the fire is one of the first rules Ralph puts in place when he's elected chief. He knows that the fire is the only thing that will give them a chance of getting rescued so he makes it number one priority. Although he does have troubles making this clear to the others as their values begin change, it is what untimately saves them.

"There's another thing. We can help them find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the moutain. We must make a fire." ( golding 21)

What does the Beast Symbolize

The meaning of the Beast

The beast is what represents the instinct of savagery that exists within all of the boys. Simon realizes they fear the beast because it's inside of them all, it represents the evil and savagery on the island. The island that was once in Ralph's control and civilized turns to savagery. "Well then-I've been all over this island. By myself. If there were a beast I'd have seen it. Be frightened because your like that- but there's no beast in the forest"
