Mochitsuki, also known as pounding rice to make mochi ricke cakes, is an important trandition that is done in preparation for the New Year (between 12/25 - 12/28)
How is it made?
Special type of sticky that is soaked in water overnight and steamed in an Usu (large bowl amde of wood or stone). After, a kine (hammer-like wood) used to pound the rice into paste. One does pounding and other shifts the rise to ensure evenness.
Once the mochi is finished, the mochi is split and shaped into small portions. After the mochi is made, some are set aside as divine offerings called Kagami Mochi. Two flat and round mochi are stacked on o=top of each other, with the lower mochi being slightly larger. This represents the seat of the New Year deities.
The Japanese have traditionally believed that material objects are all imbued with spirits, therefore the partaking of mochitsuki though to symbolize the spirit of rice.
