Nuclear Power Plants

Introduction

Introduction

A nuclear power plant is a thermal power station in which the heat source is a nuclear reactor, heat is used to generate steam that drives a steam turbine connected to a generator that produces electricity.

Boiling-water nuclear reactors

Principle

In a boiling-water reactor, the reactor core heats water, which turns directly into steam in the reactor vessel. The steam is used to power a turbine generator.

The water in the core is heated by nuclear fission and then pumped into tubes inside a heat exchanger. Those tubes heat a separate water source to create steam. The steam then turns an electric generator to produce electricity
