The Canonization Process

By: Drew Gaspar

Into to St. Giuseppe Moscati

Saint Giuseppe Moscati was an Italian doctor, scientific researcher, and university professor known for both his pioneering work in biochemistry and for his piety.

Intro

Step 1

The canonization process starts at the diocesan level. A bishop with jurisdiction will give permission to open and investigation into the virtues of the individual. The canidates life will be documented with extentive research of the canidates writings, speeches, and sermons

There is no info of St. Giuseppe Moscati at this stage.

Step 1

Step 2

"Servant of God"

Step 2

When enough valid information has been collected, the canidate recieves the title Servant of God. The Bishop then presents the gathered information to the Congregation for the Cause of Saints. The Servant of God is then given a postulator who will gather more information on their life and virtues. Later on, permission will be given to exhume and examin the body of the Servant of God. It is made certain that there is no superstitious or heretical worship of The servant. In addition to this relics are taken.

The first class relic of St. Giuseppe Moscati is a bone fragment. It can be found in Santa Maria della Sanità’s Church, in Serino, Italy.

Step 3

"Venerable"

After thourough review the Congregation will recomend to the Pope that he make an anouncement of the Servant of God's heroic virtue. If declared heroic in virtue they will be given the title Venerable.

St. Giuseppe Moscati was declared Venerable in 1973.

Step 3

Step 4

"Blessed"

To start beatification a miracle needs to be attributed to prayers made to the individual after their death. However if the Venerable was a martyr the Pope just has to make a declaration of martyrdom. The church states that it is worthy of belief that the person is in heaven. The Venerable is then beatified and given the title Blessed.

St. Giuseppe Moscati is known as a famous miracle worker, treating large numbers of dying people, many of whom defied medical odds and recovered. This being said beatification was suprizingly swift. St. Giuseppe Moscati was beatified by Paul VI in 1975.

Step 5

Saint

Step 5

To be cannonized there must be another miracle that has been attributed to prayers. The church will make a statement that the Blessed certainly enjoys the Beatific Vision. The Blessed is then cannonized and given the title Saint. after canonization the Saint will be assigned a feast day, (can be) assigned as a patron, and churches may be built in their honor.

St. Giuseppe Moscati was canonized by St. John Paul II, October 25, 1987. His feast day is November 16 and he is the patron saint of biochemistry, bachelors, doctors, physicians, and people rejected by religious orders.

Cannonization Miracle

St. Giuseppe Moscati's miracle for his canonization was the inexplicable cure of a young man who was dying of leukemia. His mother dreamed of a doctor in a white coat, whom she identified when her pastor showed her a photo of Blessed Giuseppe. Through his intercession, her son was cured and returned to his job as an ironworker. The young man, Giuseppe Fusco, attended the canonization ceremony and presented to the Pope a wrought-iron face of Christ which he had made.
