African American History

pre-1815

  • 1790’s - 1815: Increasing tensions between the U.S. and the warring European powers (France and England) over the issue of American rights as neutral shippers during time of war.
  • The War of 1812 against the British. (To resolve disputes about shipping rights). Supported by South and West of the U.S.
  • 1816: James Munroe elected president

pre-1815

Slave Life

  • Born into slavery in 1816, in Virginia, Henry Brown was born into a relatively gentle slave environment, never being deprived of food, clothing, shelter, or suffering from the terrible conditions of slavery.

  • age 15, Henry Brown began working in a tobacco factory. He showed an early talent for the trade, and with a reputation for competence and intelligence, he was eventually entrusted with the responsibility of running errands and relaying messages. This connection to the outside world would prove essential to his escape.

Current Event

During Henry's younger years, there was an event known as "The Panic of 1819". It is often refered to as the first Great depression, and for good reason. The panic also led to a general decline in the American economy in the next 3 years. I can only imagine that this had an affect on slaves. More work and demands would have made life a lot harder during this time. Not to mention less to eat as well.

Current Event

1849-1851

  • March 29, 1849, he burned his hand to the bone with sulfuric acid, to be excused from work for the day. He then set himself in the box with the most threadbare of accommodations. He carried three things: a bladder of water, a few biscuits, and a small drill, should he need to make more holes than the three already provided for ventilation. Along the sides of the box were the instructions, “This side up with care.”

  • Fearing the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which required governments and citizens in free states to help return escaped slaves to their owners, Brown traveled to Britain for asylum. He lived there for 25 years and developed a knack for illusion and mesmerism.

1849-1815

Fugitive Slave Act

The Fugitive Slave Act was an Act signed in 1850 that greatly contributed to Henry's commute to England. The act forced citizens to assist in the recovery of escaped slaves, and if they were unwilling to assist or aided a fugitive in escaping, they were subject to a fine and prosecution. This was especially dangerous because anybody anywhere could be waiting to take you back into the bondage you has already once escaped.

Fugitive Slave Act

  • Brown moved back to the states in 1875, and brought his magic act to stages across the U.S. and Canada.
  • Brown's last performance is reported to have taken place in Brantford, Ontario, Canada as stated in a Brantford newspaper.
