Goat Head Roller 2000

By Erik Woosley

About me:

Hello! My name is Erik Woosley. I like to play outside, I like science, and my favorite color is purple.

About me

Ask: What is the problem?

Goat heads getting stuck in your foot and your dog’s paws when you go into your yard.

Ask

If you've ever had one of these stuck to you, you know it's not fun!

Imagine: Ideas to help solve the problem

I thought about how to get rid of the goat heads. I then thought about the best way to do this. I thought of some different designs such as foam shoes or a roller.

Imagine

Get rid of Goat Heads

Goat heads stick to things (and you) so it made sense to make something that will get a lot of goat heads to stick without too much effort.

How to get rid of Goat heads

Brainstorm Devices

We looked at different devices that are already available. We thought about how to make a better device that was not as expensive as theirs.

Brainstorm devices

Plan

We drew out an idea for a cheap but effective goat head roller using the available and low cost parts.

Plan

Available and Inexpensive

We looked at materials that would be inexpensive and easy to find.

Available and inexpensive material

Plain socks $1.25

Long handle $1.25

Pool Noodle $1.25

Paint roller $1.25

Assembly

We screwed the paint roller into the long handle. We cut the pool noodle to fit the roller head. The sock was stretched over the foam of the noodle.

Assembly

Cost

For our Goat Head roller, the starting cost for parts was $5.00.

We controlled our costs by using easily found materials and old socks.

Create / Design / Test

Using our materials and design, we made a prototype roller. We tested the roller in our backyard. We were able to pick up many goat heads. But we needed an better way to get them off the roller.

Create / Test

Improve / Redesign

After testing, we added mesh to help remove the goat heads after rolling. We saw that the mesh got tangled and did not work very well. The sock picked up many things other than goat heads. This made it hard to scrape the goat heads off.

We took the sock off the foam. We then used a hose clamp to help scrape the goat heads off into a trash can when we were done rolling. This was the simplest way to remove them.
