What is Lycra?

Shirts, Jeans, Dresses, Sports Clothing, Leotards, Bathing Suits, and Socks

Shirts, Jeans, Dresses, Sports Clothing, Leotar...

Lycra adds stretch to all of these kinds of clothes by making them able to be tighter and looser. This material makes it easier to bend, move around, have a tighter fit, and being able to stretch with no worries.

What is Lycra Made of?

Lycra is made of petroleum, synthetic fibers, and prepolymers. Petroleum is made of crude oil. Some examples that contain petroleum is vaseline, deodorant, fertilizer, wax, and vitamins. Synthetic fibers contain all chemicals. Although it is not a natural fiber there are many more benefits. A prepolymer is two molecules put together to make a material.

Why is Lycra Important?

Why is Lycra Important?

Lycra is important because it adds stretch to all clothing. The material also has molecules that are long and flexible, the molecules provide strength. The more molecules the product or piece of clothing has, the more stretch and strength it contains.

Does Lycra have a Negative Impact on Society?

Yes, lycra has a large negative impact on the planet. Making lycra uses lots of water for cooling. Lycra also uses lubricants which can become a source of contamination. Also the material uses lots of energy to make. When lycra or a product that has the material in it that is thrown away it can take up to 30-40 years for it to decompose.

How does it's Structure Lead to the Materials Function?

Lycra’s structure is to be stretchy. The stretching structure helps it function by being in clothing and making it fit properly and allowing clothes to be tighter.
