The Problem is that Ellie hurts her nose and her sense of smell isn't working the way it should be.Everyone said her sense of smell was useless and she started being treated like a house dog while living with Maya. She did not work and she retired.
The solution was that Ellie was being shown in a school and had a chance to sniff out a missing boy. No one thought she could sniff the boy out but she saved the boy, Geoffrey, before he was washed out into the river and drowned. Ellie then was awared a medal and got to see her old owner Jackob and his new family. She found out that being a family dog wasn't that bad after all and she went back to visiting children and adults up in hosptals, in schools and all over.
If I had to rate this book on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best I would give this book a 9. I thought this book was really good. One of the reasons is because I love dogs and really liked the story of Ellie's life as being a search-and-rescue police dog. I wish it was a little bit longer but it was still good.I would recommend this book to anybody who likes dogs and suspensful books.

The Setting:In Chicago
At the very beginning, a puppy was born named Ellie. One day she met a man named Jakob who made her take a test in which he had to see how fast she could get out of a shirt. He then knew she was right for the job at the police department and took her to his home. When she was old enough, Jakob took her to work. They went to a park and the first thing she had to do was learn to how to find someone from just their scent. She was practicing with another person from the same police department, Wally. Jakob and Wally were both police men and worked with Ellie. Ellie spent most of her time as a puppy working with Jakob and Walley. One day Jakob took Ellie to the police department. They did different things there like walk up and down ramps and through tunnels. Once Ellie was older her work became harder. She started to find people by sniffing pieces of clothing from them or just sniffing out a trail of their scent. She also learned how to find people in the water. She soon was able to go in helicopters. Ellie started to do real search-and-rescue work.
On one rescue Ellie had to save a girl who had been kidnapped. Ellie sniffed her out and found her sitting on the man's porch who kidnapped her. After Ellie found her she had to sniff out the man. She found him hiding in the bushes. As Jakob followed, the man popped up and shot him. Another police man came over to get the man man and call an ambulance. After the man was arrested Ellie was taken back to the police station. Jakob was no longer able to work for the police department with Ellie, so one of the police women named Maya decided to take care of Ellie and work with her. Maya learned how to train her from Wally as Jakob did. Maya took her to run in the park almost every day. After Maya finished training her she took Ellie to do search-and-rescue. Maya and Ellie went to the scene of a horible Earthquake. There were so many people Ellie had to find but almost everyone of them weren't alive. It was so bad that Maya asked someone there named Vernon to hide so Ellie could find someone alive. Ellie then sniffed out someone under the bricks. Ellie tried to go and get the girl but fell into the cave she was in. They were eventually found and taken out. She then went home with Maya.
At the end of the story Maya had taken Ellie to the vet after the earthquake to make sure she was okay. Maya learned from the vet that Ellie had breathed in chemicles from the earthquake and Ellie couldn't work for another 2 weeks. Once Ellie got back to work her sense of smell wasn't working the way it was supposed to. She didn't give up though and kept trying to use her scent and find Wally. They said her sense of smell was useless and she couldn't work anymore. Ellie became a retired search dog and was taken to schools and hospitals to cheer kids and and adults up if they weren't feeling well or if they just wanted to see Ellie. One day while she was at a school being shown, a group of parents came into the room she was in and told Maya that there child had gone missing outside in the storm. The parents had to call the police just incase. But Ellie was very focused on finding the boy. She never gave up and kept on sniffing until she finally found the boy in a storm drain. Ellie jumped in to save him but they were washed away deep into the storm drain. Ellie held on to the boys hood so he wouldn't drown. She held on until they were washed out into a river. They were rescued by a couple of men waiting for them. Ellie then was awarded a medal for her bravery and got to see Jakob and his new family at the ceremony. Ellie didn't get to go back to work but she still was happy to be a family dog.
