History

Solar Energy Nuclear Energy

Solar energy was first invented in 1954, although the photovoltaic cell effect was discovered in 1839.

Nuclear energy was first created in a small town outside of Moscow, Russia, in 1954.

The first one in the U.S. was in

Pennsylvania.

Solar Nuclear

Percentages

Solar Energy Nuclear Energy

Percentages

In 2021 6% of the world's homes are powered by solar energy.

In 2020, about 20% used nuclear energy in the U.S.. In the world, it's about 10%.

Advantages

Solar Energy Nuclear Energy

Advantages

Solar energy doesn't produce air pollution or carbon dioxide, and photovoltaic cells have minimal effect on the environment.

Nuclear energy is super reliable and provides people with jobs. It also has a very low cost, and has barley any impact on the environment.

Disadvantages

Solar Energy Nuclear Energy

Disadvantages

Nuclear energy can causes nuclear explosions, and in the process of making electricity, nuclear waste, a toxic liquid is made.

When photovoltaic cells enter the landfill their toxic lead can leak out and will harm the environment. It is also not as reliable on rainy or cloudy days.

Differences

Solar energy Nuclear Energy

-Solar energy is not reliable.

-Nuclear energy is super reliable.

Differences

How the Energy Makes Electricity

Solar Nuclear

Step one is to mine uranium and put it in metal fuel rods. Then the uranium breaks into smaller elements after crashing into free floating neutrons.

That creates heat, which boils the water under the fuel rod. The water turns into steam, which turns a turbine, that turns on a generator and creates electricity.

How the Energy

Makes Electricity

First, light from the sun reflects off mirrors into a central receiver.Next, the salt in the receiver melts into almost a lava and is transported to the steam drum which will boil the water. After that, steam will spin a turbine and drive a generator and you have electricity. Finally, the original steam circles back into the steam drum and the salt circles back into the central receiver.
