Is it Night or Day takes place in 1938 Germany, after Nazi's took over and persecuted Jews. Edith Westerfeld, a young Jewish girl, is sent to America to live with her Onkel Jacob (uncle Jacob) in Chicago. There she must learn to tend for herself and work hard if she wants to see her family again.

The main problem for our main protagonist is getting to America safely and find a way to send money to her family in Germany. Once she arrives in America she must learn English on her own and make her way around Chicago. At her aunt's apartment, she is given lists of chores to do and a couch to sleep in. Edith needs an escape from her aunt and a way to find herself back to her family.

Edith arrives in Chicago, where she is then picked up by her Onkel Jacob (uncle Jacob). They then go meet Aunt Miriad in their small apartment, where Edith soon learns that she is not welcome. Aunt Miriad gives Edith a long list of chores to do everyday, a couch to sleep in, and a small corner of a closet to put all her belongings in. Edith has to learn English on her own and can't speak German in her aunt's apartment.

Once Edith settles into her aunt's apartment, she soon has to go to school. At school she enters with the Kindergarteners, even though she should be in 5th grade. Edith is harassed and bullied by the older kids who call her a stupid Jew, little kid, and to go back to her country. When Edith tells teachers, they just tell her to ignore them and continue paying attention in class. This motivated Edith to work harder in school so she can soon be in 5th grade with all the other 12 year olds, hoping the bullying stops.

Climax

Two years pass and it is now 1941. Pearl Harbor gets attacked by the Japanese Air Navy. Because of these attacks, the U.S government made all "foreign aliens" register to know where they are, and turn in all radios and cameras. Edith went to the post office, to register under these alien acts, where she was treated poorly and treated as an actual alien. While at the post office, she sees one of her friends from the Deutchland, who looks at her, and then quickly looks away in shame.

Falling Action

Falling Action

Months pass since Edith last received a letter from her parents. One day, she finally receives a letter, but this one is from Mina, a girl that lived with Edith and her family in Germany. Mina tells Edith that her parents and grandma were captured by Nazis, taken to concentration camps, and sadly passed away. Mina was able to escape before the Nazis got to her. Edith is tore down with grief and feels as if she is suffocating. When she tells her aunt, her aunt looks at her and says, "What did you expect?"

Resolution

Resolution

After the death of her parents, Edith finds comfort in walking along the shore of Lake Michigan. She reflects on her life in Germany and how her parents would want her to flourish in America with or without them. Edith decides to live up to the example of her parents and continue to work hard, so she can one day go back to Germany, and mourn her parents in peace.
