My favorite character in the book, The Cay is Timothy. Timothy is a kind character and a good friend to Phillip. For example, he taught Phillip how to make weave mats and catch langosta and fish. He also helped Phillip climb a coconut tree and put a rope down to help him walk to the fire. I also like Timothy because he would do anything for Phillip and even protected Phillip from the hurricane. That was my least part of the book because Timothy died of blood loss from the hurricane.
I would like to share a summary of The Cay, By Theodore Taylor. On the small island of Curaçao, it is very quiet and there is nothing going on. When the German U boats invade the island and sank 6 small oil tankers, Phillip was so happy that there was something going on. His dad worked at a refinery on the island and thought it was safe to stay, but his mom disagreed with him and wanted to take a ship out to America, called the Hato. The German U boats sadly torpedoed the Hato and Phillip and his mother got split apart. Phillip ended up on a island with an older man named Timothy. Timothy helped Phillip with giving him food, taking care of him, and taking them to one of the islands on the Cay. Timothy became blind and had to have Timothy help and do things for him. When they got on the Cay, they both learned a lot, like making fire, getting fish, getting coconuts, and building shelter. They soon encounter a huge hurricane, that killed Timothy because of blood loss from sand hitting his back. He then got rescued by boat and they took him back to his family!
I would rate this book 4 and 1/2 stars. I give this rating because it is a book of adventure, which is my favorite genre. Another reason I give this rating is because it shows how you mature after long periods of time and also that there is lots of action. One reason I don't like this book is because there is some unnecessary details and text. This is a great book to read and I really enjoyed this book.
