Relevant vs. Irrelevant Evidence

Presented by PERSON for COMPANY

Identifying Evidence

Make sure you have a clear understanding of the claim

Look at each paragraph and identify the reasons.

Each paragraph should have one reason.

Identifying Evidence

Evidence backs up reasons.

For each reason, there should be at least one piece of evidence.

Relevant Evidence

Relevant Evidence will ALWAYS connect to the claim and support the reasons.

Relevant Evidence

Example

Claim: Dogs are better than cats.

Relevant Evidence: Dogs can be trained quickly, some in a matter of minutes, to obey basic commands.

Irrelevant Evidence

Irrelevant Evidence does not relate to the claim or support the reason.

Irrelevant Evidence usually seems out of place and leaves you wondering "Why was that added?"

Irrelevant Evidence

Example

Claim: The driving age should be lowered.

Irrelevant Evidence: Auto accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers. A 16 year old is almost twice as likely to die in a car crash than a 30 year old.
