In this section we will talk about the rules and the boys lay down and how they try and create a society of their own.
When the boys meet up Ralph says that whoever holds the conch has the right to speak. This demonstrates power and anyone who holds it is seen as more powerful than others. He also creates a hierarchy as he creates leaders and groups such as the hunters.
The boys have mixed emotions about the island. This is bevause they dont want to be rescued and be safe but they also want to have fun as they are free and have no adults about.
It is ironic that the boys reference books such as 'Amazon and Swallows' as they are all based on islands and adventures. This is likely to be what they base their understanding of what top do on the island as it is their only realistic experience of it.
In this section of the book the boys are told about a creature lurking in the woods and it makes their imagination go into hyperdrive.
It is significant that it is seen in this way as the serpent shape in many cultures represents the devil and the evil within. Secondly, it is also the danger that is on the island.
Ralph is unable to stop the rumour which demonstrates the lack of power that he has. As a leader he should be able to get control of his people easily but they are taken away by the belief in the beastie.
This symbolises the savagery that even the kids have and it is the representation of the fear that lives inside them. With a beast they also have a central belief and something they can share, sort of like a religion.
In this part of the chapter the boys decide to build a fire to signal to planes. This sounds like a good idea but it might lead to some problems.
The boys decide to build the fire as they want to get rescued so they need to be noticed. This demonstrates that it isn't all fun and games and they do want to get home
The boys get the fire together quite easily and they all chip in getting wood and doing other helpful bits. This demonstrates that the island changes them rather than their normal behaviour
The boys start to argue illustrating the fact that they are about to lose their humanity. Also the 'snake thing' has been mentioned again and is apparently picking off some of the children which has them terrified
