Can you think of anything the Bible says about wealth or poverty?
Christians believe that all good things come from God and that he provides people with the things that they need to live a happy, fulfilling life.
This includes money. The Bible teaches that God gives people good things for their benefit and also so that they can benefit others.
He wants people to use what he has given them wisely
This is probably the most misquoted passages in the bible!
Below is the passage that this quote comes from. Can you find the misquote?
What difference does it make?
Timothy 6:7-10
7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
What is being said in this passage about money?
Timothy 6:7-10
7 You see we came into this world with nothing, and nothing is going with us on the way out! 8 So as long as we are clothed and fed, we should be happy. 9 But those who chase riches are constantly falling into temptation and snares. They are regularly caught by their own stupid and harmful desires, dragged down and pulled under into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money—and what it can buy—is the root of all sorts of evil. Some already have wandered away from the true faith because they craved what it had to offer; but when reaching for the prize, they found their hands and hearts pierced with many sorrows.
What is meant by “For we have brought nothing into the world, and we take nothing out of it”? Explain it in your own words.
What kind of “trap” could people fall into if getting rich became the most important thing in their life?
Can you think of examples of how love of money can cause someone “many sorrows”?
Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income”. Ecclesiastes 5:10
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, your heart will be also”. Matthew 6:19-21
Ecclesiastes 5:10
Corruption often starts at the top and works its way down.
10 As the saying goes:
Those who love money will never be satisfied with money,
and those who love riches will never be happy with what they have.
This, too, is fleeting.
Matthew 6:19-21
19 Some people store up treasures in their homes here on earth. This is a shortsighted practice—don’t undertake it. Moths and rust will eat up any treasure you may store here. Thieves may break into your homes and steal your precious trinkets. 20 Instead, put up your treasures in heaven where moths do not attack, where rust does not corrode, and where thieves are barred at the door. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
What is poverty?
What does Christianity say about poverty?
Poverty:
Means not being able to provide for basic material needs.
Absolute Poverty:
means having to live on less than $1 per day. 50% of the world’s population live on less than $2.50 per day.
The Bible says a over 2,000 things about poverty:
John 3:17-18 ~ “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and truth”.
We are going to look at how wealth is distributed in our world today. You will need your calculators for this task!
We are going to use the students in our class to represent the world.
The first sum you need to do is this:
Find 80% and 20% of 30.
This will tell us how many people will be in the rich 'north' and the poor 'south'
We are going to use 30 cookies to represent all the wealth in the world.
You now need to find 85% of 30 and 15% of 30.
85% of the worlds wealth goes to the rich 'north' and 15% goes to the poor 'south'
Within the North and South wealth distribution is not even! Though overall the North has more money the wealth is not evenly divided between all people.
To figure out how many cookies everyone should get you need to do the following sums:
1. Find 20% of 6
2. Find 50% of 25
20% of 6 = 1
50% of 25 = 12.5
In the North 20% of the people hold 50% of the wealth.
That means in the North:
One person gets 12.5 cookies
Five people get 2.5 cookies.
To figure out how many cookies everyone should get you need to do the following sums:
1. Find 80% of 24
2. Find 20% of 5
The problems of the world can seem very big and very daunting and we may feel powerless against so much suffering.
However, there are little things we can do that can make a difference!
Can you think of any things that we can do the change out world for the better?
One thing that we can do to help is to buy Fairtrade products!
Do you know what fair trade is?
Can you tell me anything about it?
When you buy a bananna, who gets the money?
Analyse the chart and tell me who gets the most and who gets the least out of the sale of this banana?
Do you think this is fair?
Why/why not?
-The way you spend your money has tremendous power to affect the lives of other people in other parts of the world.
-Many of the products we enjoy (cocoa, tea coffee and fruit) are grown in Africa, Asia or Latin America by farmers who earn little for their hard work.
-Unfair trade rules and the power of big companies means that farmers earn less money than it costs them to grow their products.
-This keeps them in poverty.
-FAIRTRADE ensures farmers earn a decent living. By choosing FAIRTRADE products you can ensure that your money helps people to earn their way out of poverty.
Providing workers in developing countries with a fair wage on which they can feed, educate and medically provide for themselves and their children.
Fairtrade cuts out the middleman
meaning more
profit goes to the
farmer.
-Supporting Fairtrade means that you can make a real difference to the world.
-The products taste great and they cost the same as leading brands.
You can buy many products Fairtrade: coffee, jewellery and clothes to name a few.
All the leading supermarkets sell at least some fair trade products.
- ASDA
- CO-OP
- Sainsbury
Tesco
Marks & Spencer
Some even have their own Fairtrade brands
