I was allocated a room in Alcuin College which I was really excited for since it was my first choice for accommodation! At York groups of accommodation blocks are called colleges. Being part of a college is a great way to feel part of a community and make friends.
When I arrived I was a bit daunted as I was in the older block and would be living with 15 other people! When I met everyone I realised I got on really well with all my housemates and my fears had been over nothing
Hey look...
there's me!
I lived in my on campus house for the entire of first year. Since my room was in Alcuin College I had an en-suite and a shared kitchen. I loved having my own space in my room but then still having that communal feel with the kitchen and everyone gathering in there for meals and parties.
And just because I lived on campus didn't mean that I didn't go home! I went home during holidays but missed my friends at university so much, I just wanted to be back as fast as I could!
There are so many positives to living on campus but here are just a few!
Living in accommodation gives loads of opportunity to make new friends; they could be a member of your house/flat, on the next floor, a different block or even a different college! Being so close to everything means it's never too far to go and meet people!
The campus at York is such a scenic place to live with plenty of greenery and wildlife nearby, so that you don't feel like you are in a cramped city
Living on campus means you are close to all the teaching rooms, you can roll out of bed 10 minutes before a lecture and still make it on time!
The city of York is so close to campus! A short bus ride away or a 30 minute walk to a day of shopping, eating, museums, cinema trips and much more! I never lived close to a city so I loved being able to go in whenever I wanted.
But campus has everything you might need so that you don't have to go anywhere! There's shops, gyms, hairdressers, restaurants, bars, a bank and loads more. It's like campus is a small town!
There are some downsides but all stuff that can be solved!
When living in halls, you need to learn to share. It could be cupboard space in the kitchen, time in the shower or what to do with your communal space. As long as you communicate to your housemates you'll be fine!
While some parts of campus can be quiet and peaceful, when there is thousands of students on campus it can be busy and noisy! Nothing worse when you're trying to sleep and your flatmates are throwing a party. But just talking to your housemates can stop it from getting too loud
If you drive you can't bring your car to campus! But York is an easy city to get around by bus, walking or even by bike!
You don't get to choose who you live with, which can be daunting! Look at it as an opportunity to make new friends. I was really worried about my housemates not liking me but we are the best of friends still 3 years later!
In the colleges there are the committees, these are volunteer positions ran by students and do all sorts of things to make you feel like part of a community in your college.
Whether its organising events or trips, making merchandise for your college, checking in to make sure you're all okay, they help make your college experience the best it can be!
The college committees organise loads of events throughout the year to get you meeting new people, trying new things and having fun.
Freshers Week is the first week of university and your college organises loads of events to let you meet new people and be properly introduced to the university. It's not to miss!
During warmer months the colleges will throw mini festivals featuring activities and games, student bands and street food!
There's also loads of college sports that take place. Often more relaxed, less competitive games but also bigger games between colleges!

STYMS stand for Second and Third Year Mentors these students are here to help you in the long term. They are a helping hand if you need some advice from an student who has already gone through what you have experienced.
My top tip would be just to be yourself! When I came to university I let myself be way more open about things I enjoyed and found that there was so many people who also loved those things and they are now some of my best friends! If I hadn't been so open I definitely wouldn't have enjoyed university as much as I did.
