Beggining of Fisrt Republic

  • Began after the Treaty of Saint- Germain in 1919

  • They were forced to sepparate from Hungary and to become a republic by the treaty they were also forced to sign, since they had lost the war

  • The president was elected for four years.

  • No party achieved a parliamentary majority, so Austria was ruled by a coaliti9on between two conservative parties.

  • This lasted up until 1932, when chancellor Dolfuss turned his government into a dictatorship

  • Start of regime: crisis in parliament + law that allowed governor to establish a regime + Dolfuss said parliament had "disolved" and didn't allow members to enter the congress.

  • Dollfuss muerder: 154 members of austrian SS take the dictator + tries to escape + gets shot

  • Austria's annexation: Hitler needs Austria to boost Germany's economy + Dollfuss' replacement (Schuschnigg) organizes a referendum but is not carried out because Hitler sends troops + Austria became German
