The two literary devices in this poem are:
Metaphor: "When your spirit has crushed mountains"
Symbol: A women is the symbol in this poem.
I believe that the verse, "When your spirit has crushed mountains" is a metaphor because a spirit cannot and has not literally crushed mountains. What is actually meant is that someone is so strong, that their spirit is strong enough to crush mountains which are very strong. The comparison is between the strength to crush mountains and someones spirit.
I believe the verse, "I want to apologize to all the woman I have called pretty." shows that a women is a symbol in this poem because it is used throughout the whole poem and represents the whole idea of the poem. A woman is brought up throughout the whole poem because the idea of the poem is to appreciate a woman for who they are.
The theme of this poem is appreciating women. At this time, women are usually judged from what they look like on the outside but not a lot of people really appreciate whats on the inside. Rupi Kaur is apologizing for calling women pretty before she appreciates who the actually are. Many people could agree that the first thing that most men look for in women is their looks. Rupi Kuar expressed that she should appreciate women for how brave and strong we can be, which is something that isn't given to us, and not always just appreciate women for our looks, which is something we are born with.
Verse 1: "I want to apologize to all the women i have called pretty."
Verse 2: "Before I've called them intelligent or brave."
Verse 3: " I am sorry i made it seem like something as simple as what you are born with is the most you have to be proud of."
Verse 4: "When your spirit has crushed mountains."
"I want to apologize to all the women I have called pretty"
The meaning of the women symbol image is to represent how a women is the symbol throughout the whole poem.
The meaning of the rose image is to represent beauty because when i though of a symbol of beauty, a rose was the first image that came to mind.
"Before I've called them intelligent or brave."
The brain shows being intelligent, and knowing right from wrong and having the ability to make good decisions.
The lion shows bravery because when i thought of something that is a symbol of being brave, a lion is fearless.
"I am sorry i made it seem like something as simple as what you are born with is the most you have to be proud of."
The hand represents something being given to you, and in this verse it is your looks being given to you.
The man smiling represents someone being proud of something, in this verse Rupi is saying looks shouldn't be the only thing a woman should be proud of.
"When your spirit has crushed mountains."
Verse 5: "From now on i will say things like, you are resilient or, you are extraordinary."
Verse 6: "Not because I don't think you're pretty but because you are so much more than that."
"From now on i will say things like, you are resilient or, you are extraordinary"
The kid standing on the hill represents being resilient and having the ability to get back up and stand strong after a difficult time.
The one different butterfly represents being extraordinary and standing out from the crowd (not being the same as everyone else).
"Not because I don't think you're pretty but because you are so much more than that."
The woman looking in the mirror represents her worrying about not being good enough, even though everyone has potential to be the best they can be.
The arrow represents being more than pretty, and having the characteristics of a strong woman.
