Venn Diagram

Compare and Contrast with your Venn Diagram how you listen to music and how it was years ago. As you go through this presentation, pay attention to the year a device was created. Pay attention to the impact it had on the market and customers, and how the device improved from the previous product.

Records

1877 Wax Cylinder Player. Invented by Thomas Edison. It was popular between 1888 to 1915. It ended in 1929.

Record Player

Originally introduced in 1912, it played about 4 minutes of music. Prior to this, phonographs were popular and started in 1877. Eventually, records were able to play longer amounts of music and were mass produced.

Tapes

Four Track Player, started in 1956. Tiny metal oxide particles are put into the tape which traps the vibrations. The tape moves through the machine to recreate the sound.

Tapes

8 Track

8 Track

8 Track Tape was invented by William Powell Lear in the 1960's. They had double the time than a 4 track tape. They were able to play both 8 tracks and 4 tracks.

Cassette tapes eventually replaced 4 and 8 track for public use (recording studios used the technology to record music).

The Walkman

Released in 1979, this device allowed people to listen to music when they were walking or traveling.

Radio/Satellite

Radio was first introduced in the 1930s. FM radio was invented in 1933 though it become more popular in the 1940's and 50's.

Imagine your life without radio.

Radio/Satellite

Satellite Radio

Satellite Radio

This was introduced in 1992. It is a digital signal that is broadcast from a communications satellite. This meant that you can listen to any station anywhere instead of a station fading out due to distance.

Streaming

Spotify, Pandora, Napster, and to some degree even youtube are all examples of streaming services. You can pick out the songs you want to listen to, or have a radio like option.

Streaming

Napster started off as a program to download music for free. They were sued by musicians, but due to the popularity, digital delivery started to take off.

Digital

Compact Discs were invented in 1979 and became more popular by the late 1980s. Today they are used for computers. This technology also helped developed the DVD.

MP3 to MP4 Players

MP3 to MP4 Players

MP 3 Players were invented by Tomislav Uzelac in 1997. In 1999 they were being sold commercially. The iPod was released in 2001. This allowed people to hear hundreds of songs instead of up to 30 from a tape.

MP 4 players add a video part to the MP 3. Most cell phones use the same technology. In fact, it's common now that most stream music through their phones.
