Serving with Power

  • Serving is one of the most important aspects of volleyball
  • Elite players afforded greater power (speed and strength) in their serve
  • Speed of my serve is much slower, therefore less powerfull

Why is there a lack in Affordance?

  • Minimal experience.
  • Not much prior knowledge of skills and technique.
  • Decreases ability to serve with power, due to unawareness.
  • Muscular power less than that of an elite player.
  • Type of serve.
  • Underarm = less force/power
  • Jump or over arm = more momentum transfer = more force/power
  • Amount of space for run up.

Effective Spiking

  • Critical part of volleyball
  • When done well it is extremely hard to return.
  • Elite players spike with effectively.
  • Spiking involves a downward striking action of the ball over the net.
  • Required to jump and meet the ball in the air.
  • Elite:
  • The ball is hit over the net with a spike.
  • Nearly every single point is won through a successful spike

Evidence

Why is there a lack in affordance?

  • Anthropometry.
  • Long limbed athletes have extra power.
  • Height.
  • Vertical jump.
  • Height of the net.
  • Inexperienced.
  • Setting further influences the ability to successfully spike.

  • Movement practice.
  • Receiving a throw instead of a set.
  • Strengthen leg muscles to increase vertical jump.
  • Depth jumps
  • Medicine ball broad jumps
  • Back squats

Conclusion

  • There a number of reasons why opportunities are and are not available to players.
  • There is a significant gap between elite and amateur affordances, but;
  • Through simple exercises, training and games affordances may be increased.
