not to

take a portable!!

What went wrong in that x-ray and patient interaction?

Keeping patient dose As Low As Reasonably Possible

How to reduce radiation to the patient.

Signage Needed in Radiology

Signage

The Pregnant Patient

  • Can have x-rays if pregnancy is known and documented
  • AVOID x-rays in weeks 3-10 during major organogenesis
  • Use wrap around shielding if possible
  • Dose Limit for fetus is 500 mRem/year or 5mSv/year

Pregnant Patient

Time-

  • minimize time the patient is exposed
  • Flouro pulsed and reset timer

Technique

  • High kVp , Low mAs
  • 15% rule

Technique and Collimation

Tight Collimation

  • collimating to the area of intrest

Compression

  • for areas like the abdomin

Shielding

Shielding

  • Gonadal Shielding
  • Gonadal shields of .5mm Pb should be used with all persons of childbearing age or younger
  • Should be used when the gonads are in or near the useful x-ray beam
  • Should be used when use of shielding will not interfere with the diagnostic value of the examination

  • Positioning shielding between the radiation source and exposed persons greatly reduces the level of radiation exposure.

Unnecessary exposures:

  • Employment TB screenings
  • annual physicals
  • hospital admissions

Determined by regulatory bodies

Avoiding repeats

Reduce Repeat and Unnecessary Exams

  • Proper positioning
  • staying focus
  • patient prep
  • collimation
  • communication
  • technique

Source to Image Distance

To reduce excess exposure to patients be sure to use the correct SID for your technique!
