Anglo-Saxon Weaponry

(Weapons, Armour)

Anglo-Saxons primarily fought on foot, making their weapons relative to their battle style. Ranged, Hand to hand and defense weaponry were all used during battles.

Weapons

Spear

-Spears was the most common weapon of the anglo saxons

-Spearheads came in many different shapes and sizes.

-Could be used in medium to close quarters and be thrown like a projectile

Sword

-Known as the “Seax”

-Could be as long as other swords(Blade length ranged from 3 in to 19.5 in.)

-Used for up close, Hand-to-Hand combat

-Only wealthiest of Anglo Saxon warriors used the swords

Battle Ax

-Most Feared weapon of the Anglo Saxons

-Known as the “francisca”

-Small size but quite heavy blade

-Designed for throwing; Probably for hand to hand combat as well.

-Could be used with a shield.

-Strange design makes it "unsettling to look at"

Chain Mail

Chainmail

Made by linking rivited rings of metal

Took the form of a shirt to protect torso

Worn during Combat

Effective against sharp objects (axes, swords), blocking any of their blows.

Shield

Circular Piece of wood glued together. Center has an Iron boss

Shield copvered in leather to hold it together

Often decorated with bronze or iron

Used to block attacks from weapons(swords, spears, arrows). Also could be used to push enemies into a vulnerable situation.
