- Due to fear, many people were illegally searched, arrested for no reason, and eventually deported
Causes
- Fears of communism due to Communist takeover in Russia (Russian Revolution)
- Turned from anti-German hysteria into anti-Communist hysteria (war propaganda)
- Fear that Russian immigrants came to U.S to establish a communist gov
- Labor unions caused fear of a revolution

- Series of unexplained bombings
- Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer created an office to research radicals
- Ordered mass arrests of socialists, anarchists, and labor agitators
- From November 1919 through January 1920 over 6,000 people were arrested based on almost no evidence
- Most suspects were foreign (Eastern Europe)
- 500 people were deported
- Palmer lost credibility after warning of huge riots that never came
- Caused hysteria to decline
