Aunt Chloe is a student-edited literary magazine that advocates for diverse representations of black women’s experiences. We publish all kinds of artistic production including poetry, short stories, essays, interviews, art, and media. Within these broad categories, we welcome submissions in both document and multimedia formats in order to bring awareness to our wide range of intellectual and creative energies. Although the majority of our contributors are black women, we welcome participation across the boundaries of race, gender, class, and sexuality with the hope that our creations will craft a more inclusive society.
Aunt Chloe is a student-edited literary magazine that advocates for diverse representations of black women’s experiences.
Aunt Chloe Literary Magazine is a testament to that mission to art and craft. Out of all Spelman publications, it is the only one specifally dedicated to creative composition. Founded in 1967 as Focus Magazine as a poetry supplement to the Spelman newspaper, it continued for nearly fifty more years printing original work by Spelman students. It was a small print magazine comprised of student-submitted original short stories, poetry and visuals. It was produced by a small editorial staff- some met independtly and others met through the ENG 390 course. Dr. Opal Moore served as falculty advisor and there were additional falculty advisory board.
It is edited and produced annually by a student-run editorial board with strong support from the English Department. The ideas expressed in Aunt Chloe do not necessarily reflect that of Spelman College.
The target demographic that the Aunt Chloe Literary Publication is marketing itself towards is the current Spelman College student body. With various print publications migrating towards the digital world online, Aunt Chloe is rebranding itself to be included within the cybernated community.
Through digital expansion, Aunt Chloe aspires to also reach an unfamiliar demographic, those who unaware of history of the publication at Spelman College, specifically; historically Black colleges and universities, women’s Colleges, and/ or at Black women’s institutions. Having Aunt Chloe target an unfamiliar demographic in collaboration with the distinguished content is offers, differentiates the Aunt Chloe Literary Publication from other student literary magazines.
An organizaed website launching event will aid in the acknowledgement of Aunt Chloe moving forward into a digital space. With Aunt Chloe being stagnant for years, we want to ensure that our veteran readers from the print edition will translate their interest into the digital atmosphere. As we continue forth in advertising to our loyal demographic, will also want to ensure that we reach our newest audiences. A website launching event will help us merge the two demorgapics.
