Low SES and How it Relates to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

INTRODUCTION

Who is Abraham Maslow?

  • Abraham Maslow was an American Psychologist who is know best for his hierarchy of needs.
  • Maslow's Hierarchy of needs expresses that a person cannot satisfy their needs is if they don't have the lower level of needs met before reach the top.
  • Basic needs must be met before more difficult and serious needs come into play

Types of Needs

Maslow divides The Hierarchy of Needs into 3 sub groups.

  • Basic Needs
  • Physiological Needs
  • Self Fulfillment Needs

A Further Look into Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Socioeconomic

Status

Socioeconomic Status

Socioeconomic Status pertains to the social standing or class of an individual or group. It is usually measured as a combination of education, income and occupation.

Socioeconomic Status can affect many aspets of life including physical and mental health, poverty, and educational achievement.

Low Socioeconomic Status in Education

Research suggests that children from low socioeconomic communities develop academic skills slower than children who do not come from a Low SES setting.

Low SES in childhood hood is associated with meager cognitive development, language and memory skills.

  • Low SES students often come from poverty. Poverty is defined as the state of being extremely poor. Basic needs are already compromised here.
  • Some parent's of students who come from low ses households general have more than one job in order to make ends meet and potentially earn enough money to get them out of poverty. If the child's parent is never at home belongingness and other psychological needs are now also defecient.

What we can do as Teachers to help Low SES Student's Succeed

What can Teachers do to help?

  • Studies have shown that given the proper resources, tools and help these students can succeed.
  • Teachers must establish positive and supportive relationships with parent's of low ses students
  • Offer flexibility, variety and choice in the classroom
  • Have clear expectations for all students
  • Use different types of assessments to test your students

Correlation

How does SES and The Hierarchy of Need Correlate?

  • Maslow states that is a persons basic needs aren't met, their more complex needs cannot be satisfied.
  • Students who come from Low SES communities usually lack things to fulfill these needs.
  • Seeing that these students don't have the essentials to meet their basic needs, it will be incredibly difficult for them to meet their other needs higher on the list according to Maslow.
