David Unaipon is a Christian Aboriginal and had a passsion for music, litrature, science and his religion.
He was musician (he played the organ), an inventor, a public speaker and also a christian preacher, travelling around south Australia.
He is also on one of the side of the $50 note.

At the age of 13, he left the mission school and became a servant to C.B Young, which encouraged him with all his interests.

James Unaipon or Ngunaitponi was David's dad.
He was born in 1835 and died in 1907 at the age of 72.
Nymbulda Ngunaitponi was David's mother. There is not much of information of her.
David Unaipon also married to another Aborigine, Katherine Carter in the 4th of January, 1902. Their marriage was not as happy as they wanted it to be.

Australian preacher, inventor and an author.
In August 2nd, 1924 he became the first Aboriginal writer to publish a book but sadly this was credited to someone else, William Ramsay Smith (an Adelaide doctor and an amatuer anthropologist) and had no mention of his name.
He wrote poetry and stories. one of his books were the Legendary Tales of the Australian Aborigines.
David Unaipon had applied to as many as 19 patents and one of them was the mechanical shearing tool.
He was obsessed with perpetual motion.
He soon earned the reputation as "Black Genius"
or"Australia's Leonardo".
Even though he invented so much, he didn't earn much from it.
Unaipon invented and improved the mechanical shearing hand tool for sheep.
He also designed the basic model of a helicopter by 1914 with 2 bomerangs.
He made this discovery 22 years before the first operational helicopter in 1936.
After witing his book, he traveled south-east of Australia for 50 years. He did lectures and sermons at Christian churches but he was often refused for accomodation because of his race.
Unaipon also visited schools and told them about their people's legends, customs and future.
In 1920, he was the best known aborigine and he ws accepted to be the spokesman for his people.

David Unaipon achieved many great things in his life including his inventions and becoming one of the first Australian writers but it wasn't so easy as that.
Due to his race he was often refused of accomoodation but in his 1951 autobiography he said "Jesus teaching that all men are brothers" helped him in coping these time of discrimination.
In June the 2nd, 1953, he was awarded the coronation medal for all his achievements in life.
