"Icarus" By: Wendy A. Shaffer

Amanda Cordle, Morgan Lewis

"Icarus"

  • Poem will have something to do with the myth i.e the story itself, the telling of a mistake etc.

Title

  • After analyzing the poem, we realized this was much more than just a story about Icarus. It revealed concepts about human nature. We believe Icarus represents how we as humans act and take part in reckless actions even though we know the consequence of that action

Connotation

Many of the objects and people in the poem are symbols for something else

Connotation

The Sun

Sun

  • In stanza #2 Shaffer wrote that the sun "beckoned enticingly"

  • This makes the sun sound like any type of temptation that could eventually lead to your ruin

The Wax

  • symbolizes a "fair-weather friend." The poem says"Did Icarus... curse the wax as a fair-weather friend?"

  • a friend who lets you down/ bad influence

Wax

The Father

Daedalus

  • literal dad in the actual myth

  • or any a wise teacher or source that gives one directions

Inventor

Inventor

  • The inventor of the wings may be God because God is known as The Creator

  • When bad things happen people often blame God. In the poem, Shaffer believed that Icarus could have possibly blamed the inventor for his fall to the sea (no parachute)

The Ocean

Ocean

  • The Ocean is where Icarus will meet his final demise

  • Symbolizes the consequences to a mistake or recklessness etc.

Tone

Tone

  • Cautionary: the poem serves as a warning of being careful and to not go down the wrong path
  • Evasive: The poem leaves you questioning... would Icarus do it again because he enjoyed it?
  • Frank: "he laughed and admitted... he would have done it anyway." this part of the poem has a very direct and honest tone

Shift

After the 4th stanza, a shift in Shaffer's idea behind Icarus' falling changed. The first 4 stanzas all have question marks throughout. But in the last 3 stanzas, they are more statement based. It seems as if the author is trying to come up with logical reasons as to why Icarus didn't make it but in that last stanza, Wendy Shaffer finally finds an answer to her question.
