Week 6 Lesson 11

Using Number Bonds for subtraction

This week we will be looking at subtraction and number bonds. Let's look at a problem:

Problem 1

Problem 1: 107 – 90

We can start by breaking apart 107 by making 100 and seven ones.

100 + 7 = 107.

Great! Now we can make an easier problem and subtract from the hundred.

What is 100 – 90?

90 plus 10 is 100,

so the answer is 10.

100 – 90 = 10

10 tens – 9 tens is 1 ten.

problem 1

Am I finished?

Does 107 – 90 equal 10?

No. What about the 7?

I need to add back the 7 ones!

What is 10 + 7?

17.

Yes! So 107 – 90 = 17.

Problem 2: 127 – 70

We need to break apart 127 into 100 and 27

Now we can subtract easily!

What’s 100 – 70 = 30.

problem 2

Great! Now, we need to look at your number bonds and add back the rest.

I know that 100 – 70 is 30.

I have to add the 27 back on and I got 57.

30 + 27 = 57.

Problem 3: 133 – 60

Let’s try a harder one.

What should we do first?

Break apart 133.

133 is 100 + 33.

Problem 3

Now let's subtract 60 from 100.

How much is 100 – 60?

40.

Let's put the parts together.

Add 40 + 33.

What is 133 – 60?

73.
